I grew up in a house where children were seen and not heard - and that applied to our emotions too.

The message I received, over and over, was that feelings were something to be contained. So I got very good at containing them. I bottled everything up until it would explode - everywhere, over the smallest things. The straw that broke the camel's back. That was my emotional baseline for years.

Long term, it had a real impact. On my behaviour, my choices, my mental health. I didn't have the language for what was happening, and I certainly didn't have the tools.
