There's a particular kind of tired that sleep doesn't touch.
You know the one. You could get eight hours, lie in on a Sunday, do nothing for a full day - and still feel it. Heavy. Flat. Like you've been running something in the background for so long that you've forgotten what it felt like before.
A lot of people who find their way to me are carrying this. And almost all of them have, at some point, decided it was just part of being an adult. Being a mum. Being busy. Being the person everyone needs something from.
I want to gently push back on that.
The normalisation of depletion
We live in a world that has decided exhaustion is basically a personality type. You tell someone you're tired and they say same and that's the whole conversation. Everyone's tired. So you're fine.
Except you're not fine. You're functioning - which is different. You're getting through the days, doing the things, being what's needed. But there's a distance between you and everything. A kind of flatness that keeps appearing even when things are technically okay.
That's not just being busy. That's depletion. And it has a different cause than most people think.
What's actually draining you
For empaths - and for a lot of sensitive, perceptive people who don't use that word for themselves - the exhaustion isn't just from what's on the to-do list.
It's from what you're absorbing. The emotional weight of the people around you. The tension in a room that nobody names but you feel anyway. The person at work who is quietly struggling and you can't stop tracking it. Your child's anxiety that lands on your body like it's your own. Your partner's stress that you absorb before they've said a word.
You're doing all the visible things and you're carrying all of that. And because the second part is invisible, you get no credit for it. You barely give yourself credit for it. You just wonder why you're so tired when you haven't done anything particularly hard.
What recognising this changes
When I work with people on this, the shift usually starts with recognition. Not with fixing. Just with actually seeing what's been happening.
Because once you understand that part of your exhaustion comes from absorbing and managing everyone else's energy, you can start to make different choices. You can learn to put some of it down. You can create some energetic space - not by becoming cold or closed off, but by having some sense of where you end and other people begin.
It sounds simple. It is not always easy. But it's possible.
Reiki is one of the most direct ways to experience what it feels like to be in your own energy again. Not managing, not absorbing, not producing. Just in it. Most people leave a session feeling something they haven't felt in a while - and spend the first few minutes afterwards trying to remember the last time they felt that.
What rest actually looks like here
This is the part that surprises people: the rest that helps is not just sleep. Sleep is necessary. But for someone who has been absorbing and carrying other people's energy for years, rest also means:
- Time where you're not responsible for anyone's emotional state
- Space that feels genuinely yours - not just unscheduled time, but space where you're not tracking anyone
- The physical experience of your nervous system settling, rather than just your mind slowing down
- Permission to stop managing things that aren't yours to manage
That last one. The permission part. That's usually the hardest bit.
Because somewhere in there, most of the people I work with are carrying a belief that the only acceptable version of themselves is the one who holds everything together for everyone else. And rest - real rest - asks you to put that down, even temporarily.
You're allowed to do that. You were always allowed to do that.
If this is where you are
You don't have to have it all figured out before you start. You don't need to know exactly what's wrong or have a plan for fixing it. You just need to start feeling something different.
A reading can be a good first step - a way of seeing what's actually happening beneath the surface, where the energy is stuck, what you might have been carrying without realising. From there, things tend to open.
And if you want to understand more of the mechanics - what's happening energetically, why sensitive people absorb what they do, how to start building some protection without closing down - the Empowered Empath course covers all of it at your own pace.
But honestly? The first step is just this: believing that feeling better is actually possible. Not someday. Not when things calm down. Now, from where you are.
